Course Content:
Sleep is essential to life. A healthy person spends about one-third of their life
in this state—as inevitable as it is mysterious—which, in humans, involves closed eyes
, a recumbent position, and the gradual loss of muscle tone, marking a
state with as many advantages as vulnerabilities.
Alongside the processes involved in metabolic recovery, the promotion
of immune defense mechanisms, and participation in cognitive processes and
the plastic neural restructuring inherent in learning and various intellectual processes
, there are certain constraints that can lead to problems
during sleep. Sleep apnea is one of the main sleep disorders and is
associated with various cardiovascular and metabolic problems, carrying a risk of
disease and premature mortality.
This course will discuss:
Current concepts regarding dental practice in sleep medicine.
The etiology of specific sleep-related disorders and their interaction with oral and dental pathology, temporomandibular disorders, and chronic pain.
Examples of alterations in the skeletal development of the maxillofacial complex that contribute to impairments associated with normal breathing during sleep and sleep-related respiratory pathology.
Challenges faced by clinicians in treating isolated persistent snoring and sleep apnea associated with comorbidities such as insomnia, bruxism, and pain.
To review the clinical characteristics of the interaction between sleep and pain, particularly in the context of orofacial pain, and treatment protocols for these complex patients.
