Social Responsibility

University Extension Program

São Leopoldo Mandic College views its outreach activities as a means of offering society the scientific, technological, and cultural potential of the institution. Outreach represents a fundamental function on par with research and teaching.

Our Mission

Extension as the Institution's Primary Function

São Leopoldo Mandic’s outreach activities are classified according to the fields of knowledge proposed by CAPES and seek to continuously expand the number of beneficiaries, address relevant social needs, and ensure a two-way relationship between the college and society.

The university extension program embodies the social commitment of the Mandic: to bring the knowledge developed in the academic environment to the community, while at the same time allowing social reality to nourish and enrich the teaching and research process within the institution.

Through ongoing projects, outreach campaigns, and partnerships with public and private organizations, students apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, developing essential personal skills such as empathy, leadership, teamwork, and social responsibility.

Community Health

Health Boat

ABMES 2018 Honorable Mention

A project that provides free medical and dental care to remote and riverside communities. Born from an idea by two young college students, the program has expanded to reach hard-to-reach regions where the population lacks basic health services. The documentary *Amazonia: The Lungs, the Blood, and the Green-and-Yellow Blood Cells*, which chronicled the project, received an Honorable Mention from ABMES in 2018.

Social Services

Mandic Social Movement

A monthly activity organized by members of the academic community for people experiencing homelessness. Volunteers distribute food, blankets, hygiene kits, and clothing to people experiencing homelessness, promoting dignity, support, and care for the most vulnerable members of society.

Mobile Health Services

Mandic Express

A program providing medical and dental care in outlying areas, carried out using mobile units (trailers) equipped as clinics. It offers educational, preventive, and curative services in the specialties of Internal Medicine, Dermatology, Gynecology, Ophthalmology, and Pediatrics, bringing quality healthcare to those who need it most.

Environment

Eco Mandic

An annual event focused on environmental education that promotes the Conscious Disposal Program, provides recycling bins for depositing recyclable materials, and encourages the adoption of digital X-rays as a sustainable alternative to conventional X-ray film, thereby reducing the environmental impact of clinical activities.

Culture

Support for Culture

São Leopoldo Mandic supports local theater productions and cultural initiatives, reinforcing its role as an agent of social transformation that extends beyond the field of health. Sponsoring cultural projects strengthens the institution’s bond with the community and promotes access to art and culture.

Documentary

Health Boat

Born from an idea by two young college students, the “Health Boat” provides free medical and dental care to riverside communities and hard-to-reach areas in the Amazon. The documentary “Amazonia: The Lungs, the Blood, and the Green-and-Yellow Blood Cells” (The Journey of the Medical Troupe), by photographer Giancarlo Gianelli, documented the expedition and received an Honorable Mention from ABMES in 2018.
