The Ph.D. program in Forensic Odontology aims I) to develop research skills and critical thinking among forensic experts, and II) to promote evidence-based practices in the field of forensic odontology. PhD candidates enrolled in this program will engage in state-of-the-art research in forensic odontology and will develop customized tools applicable to routine forensic practice. Our academic environment facilitates direct collaboration with medicolegal institutions worldwide, enabling students to understand the country-specific needs and challenges of their forensic practice. Planning projects, testing methods, interpreting and performing statistical analyses, and writing scientific materials (articles and book chapters) are some of the activities included in the PhD program. Both on-campus and remote interaction is expected between the candidates and their advisor. Teaching and supervisory skills are important components of our PhD training. By the end of the program, candidates who have successfully defended their dissertations will be able to provide training and mentor future generations of forensic odontologists. International guidelines and standards established by associations, societies, and other administrative bodies dedicated to forensic fields—particularly forensic odontology—will serve as the core of our research practice. Before proposing projects, candidates must understand the current practices advocated in each jurisdiction and the current limitations of forensic odontology that require improvement to advance the field. To this end, a background in forensic odontology (MSc) is required prior to enrollment in the doctoral program.
