The program offers opportunities for enrichment in the education of students and faculty in undergraduate and graduate programs in Medicine and Dentistry

São Leopoldo Mandic College introduces yet another innovation in the educational landscape with the launch of its Internationalization Program. This program is a process of organizational transformation, curricular innovation, staff training, and the promotion of student mobility, with the goal of achieving excellence in teaching and research, as well as preparing students to work in a global context.

Among the internationalization strategies is the Academic Mobility Program. The project offers students and faculty the opportunity to expand their knowledge at institutions offering programs in Medicine and Dentistry, while also opening doors for international students to participate in exchange programs at Mandic’s campuses.

In Medicine, four Mandic students will travel to Portugal—two to Lisbon and two to Coimbra—where they will study at local universities for one month, focusing particularly on practical aspects of hospital internships. Another four students will go to Harvard—two of them also for a one-month period—for an elective internship program (during their internship break). Two others will spend a year at the university in the United States and then return to graduate here in Brazil.

The exchange works both ways. The institution has already hosted a student from Portugal (from the University of Coimbra), a sixth-year medical student, who came to complete her elective clinical rotations at Mandic. She is currently at the Araras campus and will later move to Limeira and Campinas. The plan is to expand the exchange program. São Leopoldo Mandic currently has 11 agreements in place with educational and research institutions in the United States, India, Indonesia, Italy, and Portugal. An agreement is also being finalized with the University of South Florida and CAMLS (Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation), which is part of the university.

“Our focus is on enriching the diversity of academic training through exposure to innovative teaching methods and different approaches. Through this, we promote the exchange of knowledge and best practices among medical and dental schools around the world,” says the Coordinator of the Internationalization Program, Professor Elizabeth Ferreira Martinez, Ph.D.

The program, which—in addition to academic mobility—offers open international lectures and English language instruction, is already underway. “Academic mobility is an important component of extension activities, integrating with the educational process based on the teaching-research-extension triad. This integration is inseparable and non-hierarchical, functioning dynamically and promoting enhanced results,” adds the professor.

Opportunities for academic mobility at higher education institutions that do not have an agreement with the SLMANDIC group are also possible and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the institution. Interested students and faculty members should contact the university of their choice directly, stating their status at São Leopoldo Mandic College and requesting the necessary procedures and documents for application.

Applications from faculty and students for the program are accepted based on the availability of spots. It is important to always consult the international academic mobility office to verify the application deadline. The program offers opportunities in the following categories:

International Research Programs; Traditional Academic Exchange; International Clinical Internships; Volunteer Programs; and Courses and Workshops.
