São Leopoldo Mandic Promotes Social and Educational Initiatives at a Pink October Event
The institution was the only medical school invited by the Campinas City Government to participate in the event, which will take place on October 4 and 26
Throughout October, the City of Campinas will host various activities as part of the Pink October campaign, a month dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer. This year, São Leopoldo Mandic—the only School of Medicine and Dentistry invited to participate in the project—brought together more than 100 students from various academic specialty societies to take part in a health education circuit. The main goal of the initiative is to raise awareness among women about the importance of prevention, encouraging them to adopt healthier lifestyles.
The free event will take place next Saturday (the 4th), from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Praça da Juventude (DIC V), and on October 26, also from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Taquaral Park Kart Track. Both locations see a high volume of foot traffic, which increases public participation, as explained by Kátia Piton Serra, a teacher at São Leopoldo Mandic and the project coordinator.
“Our goal is to reach as many women as possible and emphasize that prevention isn’t limited to screenings. Healthy habits, such as a balanced diet, physical activity, and emotional well-being, are also essential for reducing cancer risk and promoting quality of life,” she notes.
The educational circuit will feature several stations where participants will have access to anthropometric assessments, dietary guidance, recommendations regarding physical activity and lifestyle changes, as well as information on safe contraception, emotional health, and guidance on when to begin screening for cervical and breast cancer. Finally, at the last station of the circuit, women will undergo an evaluation by the dental team, with referrals to a dental office if necessary.
No appointment is necessary to participate; simply show up at the event location during the time the initiative is taking place.
