Internationalization of the Master’s Program in Medical Sciences

SLMANDIC has established an Internationalization Committee responsible for systematizing international agreements and partnerships related to education, faculty and student mobility, as well as coordinating activities focused on cooperation and exchange programs. The institution promotes internationalization strategies across all its academic programs. For example, SLMANDIC has a formal partnership with the Miami Anatomical Research Center (M.A.R.C.) in the U.S. to offer courses in Surgical Anatomy for undergraduate and graduate students. Training programs have been held at the Fundación Universitaria del Bages in the field of Primary Health Care, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA, in the field of Radiology, and also in Catalonia.

An important form of exchange and cooperation, aimed at institutional internationalization, is through the participation of students and faculty in activities at foreign higher education institutions that are SLMANDIC partners. To encourage faculty members to update and consolidate their knowledge and to engage in international cooperation with groups and institutions recognized for their excellence in their respective fields, SLMANDIC approved a resolution establishing criteria for granting leave of absence for SLMANDIC faculty members to pursue post-doctoral fellowships—both domestically and abroad—for SLMANDIC faculty members, with full pay maintained, for a minimum duration of 3 months and a maximum of 1 year. Furthermore, teaching courses and presenting scientific papers at international events is strongly encouraged within the institution. There is an internal regulation that provides financial resources to cover conference registration fees, airfare, and lodging for students and faculty. 

In line with the institution’s internationalization strategies, faculty members have participated in exchange programs at universities abroad, resulting in jointly authored scientific publications at the University of Manitoba—Canada, Indiana University—USA, the University of Turku – Finland, the University of California – USA, McGill University – Canada, the University of Gothenburg – Sweden, the University of Leuven – Belgium, and the University of Illinois at Chicago – USA

Orpheus Group

São Leopoldo Mandic College is the only Brazilian educational institution to be a member of the Orpheus Group — an organization dedicated to PhD education in biomedicine and health sciences within the European system — and a member of the European University Association, which brings together educational institutions active in the health sciences and biomedicine.
Among Orpheus’s missions are the following: to represent higher education and research in biomedicine and health sciences, and to influence policy-making both nationally and internationally; promoting cooperation among association members and the development of effective bilateral and multilateral networks; fostering cooperation in research and the development of joint doctoral programs; facilitating the harmonization of doctoral programs in biomedicine and health sciences; to encourage the mobility of doctoral candidates and faculty; to promote quality assurance in research and doctoral education; and, in particular, to develop an accreditation process for doctoral programs in biomedicine and health sciences.
