Curriculum Structure for the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Dentistry

The SLMANDIC Professional Master’s Program includes courses in theoretical foundations, methodology, teaching and pedagogy, clinical training, and entrepreneurship that are interconnected and provide the necessary foundation for training highly qualified professionals to work in teaching and the labor market, with the goal of fostering critical, scientific, and entrepreneurial thinking, while strengthening scientific and technological projects and lines of research that contribute to this end. The dissertation required for completion of the program is developed in accordance with the Areas of Concentration.

The curriculum structure of the SLMANDIC Master’s program is based on four pillars of training:

(1) technical training, according to the dental specialty chosen from among the 12 areas of concentration available in the program;
(2) scientific training;
(3) teaching training; and
(4) fostering entrepreneurship and technological innovation.

This strategy aims to meet the program’s objectives in training highly qualified professionals who are technically and scientifically capable of conducting research and technological development, but above all, entrepreneurial professionals capable of directly addressing the needs of society in the professional world outside academia.

To enhance didactic and scientific training, the courses in Biostatistics, Biosafety and Medical Emergencies, Scientific Research Methodology, Higher Education Methodology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Health Sciences, Drug Therapy, and Experimental and Human Bioethics are common to all areas of concentration, are required courses, and aim to develop students’ scientific thinking as well as provide incoming students with didactic and pedagogical training.

For technical training, each concentration area of the program (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology, General Dentistry, Temporomandibular Dysfunction and Orofacial Pain, Endodontics, Implant Dentistry, Digital Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Dental Radiology and Imaging, and Public Health) has its own specific courses with a significant number of hours dedicated to clinical practice, in addition to a focus on scientific experimentation and/or technological innovation. It is important to note that, in addition to the required courses defined by each concentration area of the program, students have the opportunity to take up to three elective courses in another concentration area, highlighting the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary nature of the education provided to students entering the program. This option includes taking courses at other educational institutions, subject to approval by the program coordinators, which will be fully recognized by the SLMANDIC Master’s program. All courses included in the program were designed to integrate the curricular structure of the areas of concentration with the research tracks.

Academic Master’s Degree in Dentistry

In the MASTER’S PROGRAM, courses in theoretical, methodological, and didactic-pedagogical foundations—common to all areas of concentration—are mandatory and aim to foster critical thinking and provide incoming students with both didactic-pedagogical and scientific training. These courses are: Biostatistics, Biosafety and Medical Emergencies, Scientific Research Methodology, Higher Education Methodology, Experimental and Human Bioethics, Teaching Internship I, and Health Policies. Academic Doctorate in Dentistry

The courses for the DOCTORATE differ from those in the master’s program in that they allow for a deeper exploration of scientific and critical knowledge, with the goal of training researchers who have the autonomy to carry out their work at any institution. As with the master’s program, there are required courses common to all areas of concentration, which are: Fundamentals of Cell Biology, Scientific Research Methodology II, Tissue Response, Oral Diagnosis, Finite Elements, Oral Microbiology, Biostatistics II, Biomaterials and Dental Materials, Immunopharmacology, Introduction to Lasers, Systematic Review, Clinical Seminars, and Research Seminars.
